Operationalizing High-Quality Dual Language Programming
This resource highlights the importance of Dual Language Immersion (DLI) for emergent bilingual children, emphasizing that 33% of young children in the U.S. are learning two or more languages. Despite research supporting DLI as the most effective instructional approach, many emergent bilinguals receive only English instruction in early education. The resource aims to operationalize high-quality DLI education for young children, offering a comprehensive framework with seven key dimensions, including programmatic structures, language allocation, curricula, workforce development, and family engagement. Additionally, it addresses the need for equitable enrollment, culturally valid assessments, and support for bilingual children with disabilities. The resource underscores the significance of high-quality DLI programs in fostering bilingualism, biliteracy, and socioemotional development.
