The research on writing for emergent bilinguals (ELs) tells us that reading and writing must be paired so that students are engaging with real texts and different genres that display language that is appropriate to the content. Exposure to different genres provides “an appreciation of the norms and conventions of each discipline” which are necessary models for those unfamiliar with the language and its different uses.
