Building Equitable, Safe and Supportive Schools

David Osher,Elana Kanter,Sara LaHayne,Deborah Moroney,Jennifer Money,Elizabeth Nolan

Learning happens in different ways, places, and times. Learning environments are created by
physical spaces; physical materials; and many types of players, including students, support
staff, paraprofessionals, teachers, administrators, families, safety resource officers, community
members, and more. Many aspects of the school/learning environment can help students, staff,
and families feel safe and supported. In this brief, the U.S. Department of Education has outlined three categories of safe and supportive schools: environment, safety, and engagement.
